A PLACE CALLED HOME HONORS INSPIRATIONAL WOMEN

Women are honored as role models for girls served by APCH in its GirlPower Project A Place Called Home (APCH), which for 20 years has provided a safe haven for underserved youth in South Central Los Angeles, honored four outstanding women whose personal and professional lives provide inspiration to the young women and girls served by APCH’s programs, most notably those enrolled in its GirlPower Project. “We’re so fortunate to be able to recognize these four women whose professional and volunteer leadership continues to make a difference for our community’s children,” said Jonathan Zeichner, APCH’s executive director. “We constantly seek to present role models to our young people— outstanding women and men who influence our society for the greater good. There’s little question that Amy Ziering, Dana Green, Susan Feldman and Alison Pincus fall into that illustrious category.” An award-winning and Oscar-nominated documentary producer and director, Amy Ziering was presented with the GirlPower Social Change Award. While the award recognizes Ziering’s body of work, it particularly honors her 2012 documentary “The Invisible War,” a groundbreaking investigation into the epidemic of rape in the U.S. military. Boutique Hotel on a Budget in Paris

By Josie Villa-Singleton a.k.a Travelista Mama Shelter’s unique name corresponds to its equally new concept.  Normally staying in a boutique hotel designed by  Phillipe Starck does not come cheaply, especially in a major city.  Mama Shelter changes all that.  The rates at Mama Shelter start at 79 Euros.  Anyone who’s stayed in a fine but functional Parisian budget hotel knows this rate can’t be beat. The first photo shows a typical Paris budget hotel room at a cost of around 100 Euros, the second shows the rooms at Mama Shelter. Mama Shelter showcases Phillipe Starck’s whimsical eye with graffiti grazing the ceilings and a unique mix of materials that include concrete, glass, and wood.  The eating areas combine old-school or shall I say Old World long wooden tables and benches.  The tech addicted can dine and surf at tables equipped with built in computer screens.  I-Macs, free Wi-Fi, Kiehl’s toiletries and five star bedding await you in your room.  All I can say is “bonjour, baby” and bye-bye to stiff, scratchy sheets.  You’ll find live indie rock and electronica music across the street at La Fleche D’or. So here’s the deal.  Mama Shelter is in the 20th arrondissement, which in more ways than ...

Flying in Style: Doctor’s Orders!

Attention all Divas! Planning for a vacation getaway can be overwhelming. With your pampering appointments booked, aimed at getting you in perfect condition for lounging poolside or hitting the slopes, don’t let your long flight overseas undo all of the primping and prepping you’ve done. Marina Peredo, M.D., F.A.A.D, founder of Marina I. Peredo, M.D., P.C. Dermatology and Spatique Medical Spa in Smithtown, N.Y., offers tips to caring for your skin on-flight, no matter how you fly or where your destination may be. Long Flights in Coach: Keep your skin hydrated by drinking lots of water. It also helps with fatigue, dizziness and light-headedness. Bring a travel sized moisturizer for your face and hands to prevent skin from drying, accentuating fine lines, wrinkles and tiredness due to low humidity and cabin pressure. Swipe on a hydrating lip balm. Recirculated air tends to dry out lips. Take along a travel size illuminating eye cream to camouflage under eye circles, darkness and puffiness. Avoid salty snacks and alcohol which retain water and cause further dehydration. Try not to wear mascara - the dryness causes the mascara to flake and can irritate your eyes. Long Flights in First Class: Same as above, plus: Ask for a cool wet cloth to lie over your face before you moisturize.  Moisturizing while your face ...
