Koffeehouse is proud to present its 4th Annual “Evening of Independence” benefitting MusiCares® on August 7, 2010 at the Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood. The evening will feature the most talented emerging artists and special guests with featured performances by Verve/Universal recording artist, actress KATHARINE MCPHEE, Island Def Jam recording artist JON MCLAUGHLIN, national recording artists HONEYHONEY, Los Angeles Indie-rockers THE DAYLIGHTS, GRAMMY-nominated SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER, who will be reuniting at The Ford after a six- year hiatus as well as a special performance by award-winning cellist, TINA GUO accompanied by Marcelo. The event will be hosted by award-winning correspondent and host, ANGELA SUN of Yahoo! Sports’ Minute, Tennis Channel and NBC First Look.

Koffeehouse’s 4th Annual “Evening of Independence” is in official partnership with Los Angeles County Arts Commission and is sponsored by ABC7, KPFK 90.7fm, Univision, LA Weekly, LA18, and Fusicology. One hundred percent of the evening’s net proceeds benefit MusiCares, whose mission is to provide a safety net of critical assistance for musicians in times of need (www.grammy.org/musicares.com).

“When we started these intimate showcases in my backyard nearly seven years ago, we had no idea we would be participating in the promotion and production of so many high-profile concerts and music festivals years later,” says Koffeehouse Founder Jeremy Koff. “We’re extremely honored to have worked with so many talented artists and take pride in giving them a platform to share their extraordinary ability with the music industry.”

The pre-show will take place in The Ford’s Edison Plaza courtyard from 6:00-7:30PM and will feature a silent auction, picnicking and performances by some of LA’s most talented emerging artists including Terra Naomi, Freddie and Francine, Shawn Hlookoff and Jayme Dee. Picnic baskets and wine are permitted during the pre-show in the Ford’s entryway as well as in the Ford Amphitheatre itself.

Previous Koffeehouse “Evening of Independence” concerts have featured artists including Jon Foreman (Switchfoot), Alex Band (The Calling), A Fine Frenzy (Virgin), Rocco Deluca & The Burden (Ironworks), Matt Scannell (Vertical Horizon), Tyrone Wells (Universal), MoZella (Universal), Trevor Hall (Geffen/White Balloon), Ryan Star (Atlantic), among many others.

Tickets to Koffeehouse’s 4th Annual “Evening of Independence” are $25 if purchased 7 days or more before the show and $30 thereafter. VIP tickets are available for $100 which includes pre-paid parking at The Ford, access to the VIP lounge—which includes an open bar and food, a mention of you or your company in the official event program, a gift bag full of goodies and the best seats in the house. Discounted student tickets and group tickets are also available. Doors open at 6:00PM. The pre-show runs 6:30-7:30PM. The main show starts at 8:00PM.

Legendary guitar hero Michael Landau will debut at the infamous Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz, CA on Sunday, June 20th, 2010 with his amazing psychedelic-blues-jazz-cosmic band “The Michael Landau Group,” along with soulful blues-rockers The Kirk Fletcher Band for a special afternoon Father’s Day performance.

“I live for those live moments when the sound and emotion becomes this monstrous force bigger than the individual musicians, it becomes a unique creation and feel, exciting and calming at the same time, difficult to describe but I’m addicted to it,” Landau describes about playing live with his group.

Landau has recorded on over 700 records with everyone from Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd, Miles Davis, BB King, James Taylor to Joni Mitchell; and been known to wear many hats as a songwriter, producer, and engineer in addition to his enormous guitar credits since the early 80’s. Landau’s supergroup includes jazz artists Gary Novak on drums and Travis Carlton on bass. Landau will also perform as a featured guest in The Kirk Fletcher Band, with a special jam session to conclude the show. This amazing co-bill of jazz, blues and rock all in one afternoon is not to be missed!

BILLY KENT

Billy Kent is a singer songwriter born in Los Angeles and raised in Highland Park (Northeast LA.) His songs are influenced from the many cultures and sounds of the city. His first full-length album “Soul Soft” was released January 1, 2008. Artist that have recorded Billy’s songs include: Tower of Power, Vinx, and new artist Leigh Jones. In 1987 Billy wrote “Baby’s Got the Power” with Greg Adams, Tower of Power’s long-time horn arranger, and Ellis Hall. He later wrote the lyrics for three more Tower of Power tunes: “Someone New”, “It All Comes Back”, and “Quiet Scream”. JOHN DIRESTA

John DiResta is the real deal. He was raised on the rough and tumble streets of Long Island, where all he did was drink beer, listen to heavy metal and make fun of people. If you got mocked by John DiResta, then you were in with the in crowd. After dropping out of two colleges (New Paltz and Nassau Community) John took the New York City Police Exam. On July 15th, 1986 John was sworn into the worst police department in the history of the world, the New York City Transit Police. In 1992 John started his comedy career in the bowels of the New York comedy circuit. Five years later his one man show, BEAT: A Subway Cop’s Comedy, open to raved reviews. The New York Times called him “UPROARIOUS. John quit the police department and moved his wife and three kids to the west coast. Hits include Miss Congeniality, 15 Minutes with Robert De Niro, Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the Howard Stern Show. In the spring of 2004 John’s show, Trash to Cash, premiered on the FX Network. John then went on to star in How To Loose a Guy in Ten Days and Miss Congeniality Two. In the fall of 2007 John began work on his next two TV adventures: American Body Shop was on Comedy Central for one year and Hammered lasted two seasons on HGTV/DIY Networks. www.johndiresta.com

ROB PAULSEN

Robert Fredrick Paulsen, III (born March 11, 1956), sometimes credited as Rob Paulson, is an American voice actor best known as the voice behind “Raphael” from the 1987 cartoon of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, “Yakko Warner” and “Dr. Otto Scratchansiff” from Animaniacs, “Pinky” from Pinky and the Brain and Animaniacs, and Throttle from the 1990s and 2006 versions of Biker Mice From Mars. His role as “Yakko” won him a Daytime Emmy Award for male vocal performance; he won a second one for his portrayal of “Pinky”. He was also “Prince Eric” in The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea. In total, Paulsen has been the voice of over 250 different animated characters and performed in over 1000 commercials. AUDREY TURNER

San Francisco-born Audrey Madison Turner attributes her musical inclination to her parents. Audrey founded “Madison Avenue,” with contributions from musical genius Stevie Wonder. The family-based group produced hits including “Buttercup” and “Much In Love.” Additionally, she became the assistant choreographer to Lon Fontaine of Motown, creating routines for major superstars such as Aretha Franklin, the Temptations, and the Pointer Sisters and graced the stage with Chuck Berry, Little Richard, BB King and Little Milton. Then Ike Turner took an unabashed liking to Audrey. After meeting Ike Turner through a mutual friend Madison-Turner didn’t think twice about sharing the stage and going on tour with the man himself. Their professional relationship eventually segued into a romantic one, leading to a wedding years later. Ike and Audrey recorded multiple tracks together on his Live Montreaux Jazz Festival CD and Ike Turner’s Final CD before his historic passing in December of 2007. She is currently writing a book about the last years of their life together. Audrey Madison-Turner will soon release her first solo album, appropriately titled “Picking Up The Pieces.” Empowered by her sexuality, the R&B sex-symbol’s vocals have a haunting passion and her looks are reminiscent of a young Tina Turner. With the subtle, yet dominant sultriness of Chaka Kahn and the mystifying huskiness and tone of Macy Gray, Audrey is a fusion of today’s best female vocalists with a personal twist. PICARD MANUEVER

Picard Maneuver is a comedy duo specializing in nerd-based humor that all ages and audiences can enjoy. Formed by Adam Fanshier and Mike Hover in 2007, they combined elements of musical comedy, vaudeville, physical comedy, audience interaction, and improvisation to make their distinctive act. Jon Ernst is a much sought-after L.A.-based composer and music supervisor. An accomplished singer-songwriter, Jon’s television career began as “Pianoboy,” the on-camera musical director of the classic MTV game show “Singled Out.” Jon is Music Supervisor on MTV’s mega-hits “The Hills” and “The City”, and has worked in that capacity on many other shows, including “Celebrity Circus” (NBC), “Nashville” (Fox) and “Laguna Beach” (MTV). Hempstead Nursery is fronted by Lead Singer/Songwriter David Floyd. Singing is something Erin Ragland just decided to do. She woke up one day at age 5 and just felt like she could, so she did. “I didn’t look for influences, but was always drawn to songs that were passionate, songs that made your guts come out of your mouth when you sang them,” says Erin. “Singers like Janis Joplin and Pat Benatar taught me how to feel a song, and I learned how to riff from Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.” Today it’s Glen Hansard, Susan Tedeschi, Patty Griffin, Toots and the Maytals, Gavin DeGraw, and Amy Winehouse that meld her sound. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy HORNS – Since their arrival on the music scene in 1993 in a legendary residency at Los Angeles’ Brown Derby nightclub, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s irresistible live show and aggressive, musically perceptive approach has proven them over time to be the singular standout among the numerous bands that launched the Nineties swing revival. Hump-Day has a new name: ODD WEDNESDAYS

“Odd was hilarious!” said Mindy Vargas, as she walked out the door near Sunset & Vine, vowing to be back in 2 weeks. She was talking about the new music/variety show “Odd Wednesdays” taking up residence at Ivan Kane’s Cafe Was every odd numbered Wednesday night.

Cafe Was is the latest jewel in Kane’s crown – the bold impresario behind the LA and Vegas incarnations of the retro-burlesque “40 Deuce.” His new place, a ‘Bohemian Bistro’ in Hollywood at Sunset & Vine has been open 15 months and is hitting its stride just as the weather turns warmer and people are venturing out of their homes. With live entertainment, including burlesque Thursday through Sunday, Kane was open to something different while expanding his entertainment to Wednesdays. And that’s what he got.

TV host Mark DeCarlo, best known from the dating show Studs and more recently, “Taste of America,” a comedic food show on the Travel Channel, was back home in LA and itching to do another live show. “TV’s Mark Walberg and I used to host a variety show at the Atlas Suppler club, adjacent to the Wiltern Theater a few years ago. It was a combination of comedy, improv, variety acts and great live music,” he explained. “We had Second City guys like Steve Carrell, and Jim Turner, along side new singers and strange hypnotists. It was the Gong Show without the Gong.”

DeCarlo hosts Odd Wednesdays, sprinkling in his off-the-cuff comedy between jamming with the phenomenal house band, Old Blues Eyes. Regular viewers of his Travel Channel show would catch brief riffs of his harmonica playing, but live at Cafe Was, DeCarlo lets it fly. The house band, comprised of session players and film and TV composers, backed DeCarlo, and all the singers throughout the night and stunned the packed house with their expert playing, all while keeping the volume perfectly suited for the upscale, yet comfortable club.

A few mediocre comics were mixed into the night. Not hilarious, but brief enough to endure. Comedic highlights included Italian comics Jimmy & Joey and Ron Barba’s musical comedy set, mixed in with awe-inspiring juggling by Bryson Lang and Roxanne Ferrara’s risqué burlesque. DeCarlo also had some fun with the packed house in between acts.

One comic ended her act by spitting milk all over the stage floor, shorting out the entire sound system. The crew flew into action to fix the problem, leaving DeCarlo on stage – with time to kill. Using the easy, laid back style honed in over 400 Travel Channel cities, he simply started talking to audience members, settling finally on a little 8 year old girl who’d just seen “Cats” down the street at the Pantages Theater. The audience was howling as the little girl described the various cats in the show, while DeCarlo had fun with her, but never at her expense. In no time, the sound was fixed and the show continued.

By far the musical discovery of the night was young vocalist Erin Ragland. An unknown, DeCarlo found her through MySpace and invited her to join the cast for the night on a hunch. Her robust, throaty voice rocked the room and brought even show business veterans like Chris Bearde (creator of the original Gong Show), and Billy Riback (Home Improvement) to their feet.

Though the show presents twice a month, each show is conceived differently. The First odd Wednesday of each month is a ‘jam night’ where unknowns come down and sing and perform their acts in rapid succession. The Last odd Wednesday of each month features only known musicians and actors from film and TV, with just one or two of the Jam Night standouts mixed in.

Odd Wednesdays plans to be the place where musicians in town to play one of LA’s larger venues can come in and do a few tunes to promote an upcoming gig along side established comics in a hip room in the heart of Hollywood.

DeCarlo goes on: “The goal is to do a an original, one of a kind show where people can walk through the door and see someone they know from TV doing something they didn’t know they did.”

“Jeff Goldbulm played here New Years Eve,” explained Kane recently. “The guy is a fantastic musician, had his band around him. People were stunned at how good he is. He played all night, and we were filled with happy people. Which is how I like it.”

Seems like Kane and DeCarlo are well on their way to being happy for a long time.
